How long until your abs show?

Estimate your body fat from a tape measure, see the weight where abs usually show, and get an honest week-by-week timeline.

Body fat now

20.1%

US Navy tape estimate

Target weight

72.6 kg

at ~12% body fat

Time

~20 weeks

7.4 kg of fat to lose

How this was calculated: Target weight assumes you keep your lean mass — which needs enough protein and continued strength training. Body-fat estimates carry an error of several points, and where abs appear varies person to person. A planning range, not a promise.

Estimates for healthy adults, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or a history of disordered eating, speak to a qualified professional first.

Worked example

A man at 80kg and 20% body fat has about 64kg of lean mass. Abs usually start to show around 12%, so if that lean mass is kept, the target is about 72.7kg — roughly 7.3kg of fat to lose. At 0.5% of bodyweight a week that is about 20 weeks. At 0.75% it is about 13 weeks, but keeping strength gets harder the faster you go.

Common questions

What body fat do you need to see abs?
Commonly cited ranges are roughly 10–12% for men and 18–20% for women. These are rough bands: where you store fat, and how developed your abdominal muscles are, change where definition appears.
How accurate is the tape-measure (Navy) method?
It is an estimate with an error of several percentage points either way. It is most useful for tracking change: measure the same way, at the same time of day, every two to four weeks.
Will ab exercises burn belly fat?
No. Spot reduction is not supported by research. Ab training builds the muscle; a calorie deficit is what reveals it.
Why is my timeline longer than adverts promise?
Sustainable fat loss is usually 0.5–1% of bodyweight a week. Faster rates cost more muscle, which makes the end result look flatter, not more defined.

Follow the timeline with a plan: strength, core and a deficit that tracks your waist.
