Is your workout time enough to build muscle?

Enter the minutes you actually have. See how many hard sets fit, how that compares to the evidence on weekly volume, and how to close the gap.

Hard sets per session

8

after a 5-minute warm-up

Sets per muscle / week

4

24 sets across 6 major groups

For ~10 sets per muscle

40 min

per session, 3× a week

How this was calculated: A real training dose — beginners will build muscle and strength here. Every extra set moves you toward the ~10-set range linked with more growth. Assumes ~1¾ minutes per set including rest.

Estimates for healthy adults, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or a history of disordered eating, speak to a qualified professional first.

Worked example

Three 20-minute sessions a week, minus 5 minutes of warm-up, leaves 15 minutes. Supersets take about 1.75 minutes per set including rest, so about 8 hard sets fit per session — 24 a week, or 4 per major muscle group. That is enough to keep improving as a beginner; adding a fourth session or 10 minutes per workout gets you much closer to the 10-set range linked with more growth.

Common questions

Is 20 minutes a day enough to build muscle?
For beginners, yes — especially with supersets and sets taken close to failure. Growth tends to rise with weekly sets up to around 10 per muscle (Schoenfeld et al., 2017), so more time helps, but short sessions done consistently beat long sessions you skip.
Do supersets work as well as normal sets?
Pairing non-competing muscles (for example a press with a row) cuts session time substantially without a meaningful loss of performance on either exercise.
How many sets do I need to keep the muscle I have?
Far fewer than to build it. Research on detraining and maintenance suggests a third or less of your building volume, kept hard, maintains size and strength for months.
Should I do full body or a split?
With 2–3 short sessions a week, full body covers each muscle more often. When weekly sets are equal, frequency matters little, so choose what you will keep doing.
